Djinn, Sirens and Other Troubles
Opening October 25th

Winslow Garage is pleased to present Djinns, Sirens, and Other Troubles by Los Angeles artist Holly Topping. In this exhibition, Topping presents an installation of painted hanging gourds, small paintings on wood crosscuts, and a selection of watercolors on paper. Known for her highly skilled paintings of figures with cheeky contemporary concerns, this work presents the artist in full play mode. Naughty sprites cavort through air and sea causing the occasional disaster and disembodied arms elegantly smoke cigarettes in fantasy landscapes. Drawing from mythology, memory, and contemporary experience, these works reveal the strange ways we adapt to uncertainty and catastrophe.

Holly Topping is a Los Angeles–based artist and educator whose paintings explore the strange intersections of personal history, cultural memory, gender, humor, and unease. She received her MFA from the University of California, Irvine, and has exhibited extensively in Los Angeles and nationally, including solo exhibitions at Angles Gallery and Orange Coast College. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Bass Museum of Art, Torrance Art Museum, and the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, and is held in the collections of the Bass Museum of Art and the Museum of Sex in New York. Topping has been a tenured professor of art at Orange Coast College since 2008.

Adrienne Kinsella
Habitat

Winslow Garage is pleased to present Habitat, a selection of colored pencil drawings on frosted mylar that explore home, belonging, memory, and access through personal, familial, and ancestral histories. In these works, Adrienne Kinsella reflects on the shifting nature of place—how spaces, people, and connections can be lost, transformed, or reclaimed over time. Rendered in meticulous detail, these ghostlike translucent works blur the line between memory and reality, honoring loved ones, landscapes, and moments of refuge while examining the boundaries that shape our lives. Native plants and birds in flight emerge as symbols of resilience, healing, and the possibility of return. Accompanying the exhibition is a soundscape by Samuel Kinsella, featuring birdsong recorded during hikes in Griffith Park, a place of solace and renewal.

Adrienne Kinsella is a fine artist, working in a variety of media, focusing on drawing and painting. As a descendant of the Tongva of Los Angeles, issues of access and belonging, or lack thereof, is a theme that spans her work. Her representational works utilize native plants, examine interiors, exteriors and collapse timelines in an ongoing search for home. Earning her MFA from California State University Northridge in 2021, Kinsella has shown recently at La Mama Galleria in NYC, OXY ARTS, Art Bug Gallery, Dorado 806 and Launch Gallery in Los Angeles among others. In summer 2024, she was awarded a full fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. Kinsella teaches at Otis College of Art & Design, and lives in Los Angeles.
